Story Behind the Program
I attended SPLASH, an education program for high school students held at many colleges around the US. For the better part of two days, I had the opportunity to take hour-long crash courses on a vast range of subjects. It allowed me to truly embrace my curiosity. I love to learn new things and wanted to create a similar program at my school so that others could experience the excitement of learning for the sake of learning.
SLIC is a program that gives high school students the opportunity to share hobbies, skills, and information on topics they are passionate about. The students of our middle schooler were able to attend multiple crash-course-style classes on a wide range of topics including Taekwondo, the History of Jazz, Silk Screening, Turkish Culture, First Aid, and Tango. This program gave them the experience of learning simply for the sake of learning as well as exposure to experiences they would likely not come across elsewhere in high school.
Creating this program was meaningful to me because I was able to bring my joy for learning to others by creating a space for others to share what they were passionate about. It was so beautiful seeing so many students embrace their curiosity.
